COURSE OVERVIEW

Did you know that game engines like Unreal Engine are being used a variety of manufacturing industries for collaboration, fabrication, and simulation? UE is also used heavily throughout the movie industry for visual effects.

We've created this course for those in the manufacturing industry that would like to develop game engine skills to be ready for any emerging company needs. Any conversation you might have heard lately about AR or VR in industry is very likely going to involve a game engine, and someone is going to have to build those environments.

Of course we'll be covering all the basics of game making as well, so if you're more interested in a little fun, then you can come for that as well. There really isn't much difference between an online multiplayer game and a company online collaboration and training hub. ​

Metaverse - An immersive digital space that allows for remote collaboration and innovation in diverse industries by simulating physical and often persistent environments. (This has nothing to do with the Meta company)

With access to thousands of highly detailed assets, it's not much more difficult than "drag and drop" to create a realistic environment in little time.

Many of the assets are captured from real elements by professional photogrammetry.

Nanite enabled models from the Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo

There are many new technical features with Unreal Engine 5. These help remove a lot of the limitations and time involved with older engines. 

​

The major updates were a new lighting system called Lumen and a mesh building system called Nanite. This means you can have incredibly detailed models and the engine will smoothly remesh the models the player gets closer.

Model from our Blender Industrial Design Course

Learn how Blender 3D design software can be used to create and texture assets that can then be used inside the environments you design in Unreal Engine.

This, and other software are all a part of a fairly complex workflow or pipeline that you'll learn about as you work through the course projects.

Blender to Unreal Engine

All coding in Unreal Engine that we'll be working with is in a visual system they call "Blueprints". This is a great system that allows us to get things done much quicker.

​

If you've avoided game design because you were worried about too much text based coding, the Blueprint system is much more understandable.

Meta Quest 3 - This or similar used in class

Virtual Reality

In class everyone will work with their own set of VR goggles to access and work with, the worlds they create. 

​

In Unreal, the development for VR is already built-in. All you have to do is tell it that the game you're making is for VR. From there, we'll work on VR specific concepts like "grabbing" items and "smooth motion".

Many people haven't ever experienced VR or know what it's capable of. We want to introduce students to this technology and highlight it's far-reaching capabilities so they can see for themselves where it's future lies.

VR Gaming may remain a little niche, mostly due to the cost, but industrial applications like VR collaboration, manufacturing assistance, simulation, and digital twins, will be solid for many years to come.

Registration

The Pre-Registration List

​

To help ease the college registration for our CTECH students we've created a spreadsheet to hold students' place in class while they wait for classes to be scheduled, vouchers to be received, voucher access (I believe it's a month before class), or any other complication in the process. We can add you to the spreadsheet before you get a CTCLink ID, but you will need to have one eventually. 

 

We'll reach out to you as we get closer to the class start date.

Register by phone between 9am and 4pm PDT (This is the easiest way)

Important - You will need a CTCLink ID number in order for us to help you over the phone or in person. You can follow the steps below to get one.

Enroll as: "First Year"

Once you have received your CTC Link ID number please let us know and we can get you registered for your class.

Washington State colleges are now using CTCLink for all student services.

  • Follow the link below - login in or create an account

  • Go to "Student Homepage"

  • Choose "Manage Classes"

  • "Class Search and Enroll"

  • Choose Edmonds College and the quater (Control + F to search page)

  • Search for class name or number (Class Number will get you to where you want faster)
